Vandals Topple Statue

Plains - Peanut farmers protesting the presence of a statue in honor of a prominent human farmer neighbor vandalized said statue. A spokesman for the group told the Gazette that the statue is a reminder of the oppression they have been suffering at the hand of human farmers.

Hundreds of peanut farmers, joined by scores of pecan farmers and peach farmers, gathered to block traffic on I-75 near Plains. While authorities were trying to clear the roadway, a small contingent of the farmers assembled at the statue and toppled it from its base.

GBI agents were called in to process the scene. No arrests have been made and no suspects have been named. The only evidence found at the scene is a few tire ruts from small vehicles and dozens of indistinct footprints. See (p. 3) for photos.
